Surface plus
By means of an extended method of test - surface protection plus - the materials are tested at system level, i.e. the complete product and not just the component part is tested in the respective range of application.
- Geometric influences are taken into consideration
- Testing with real test media
- Optimum material selection and combination
- Test method for corrosion protection (component-oriented and design-oriented)

Dependance of corrosion on local ambient conditions, e.g. corrosion rate for low alloyed steel.

Test methods for corrosion protection
- according to current regulations e.g. EN, IEC, ASTM
Benefit: same scale, comparable
Disadvantage: merely component-oriented (for example sheets only)
Extended test methods (Rittal)
- Testing on system level (complete product instead of component parts)
- Geometric influences are tested as well (edges, gaps,...)
- Testing with real test media
Benefit: Practice-oriented, optimum material selection and combination in the respective field of application (coated steel, stainless steel, aluminium, zinc).
Constructive corrosion protection:
- Prevention and sealing of gaps
- Appropriate pairs of material
- Organic coating as far as possible
