iRack
The term Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) refers to a method for automatic identification of objects. Apart from contactless identification and localisation of objects, RFID also enables the automatic acquisition and storage of data. An RFID system requires a transponder, which characterises the object, a reading device to retrieve the information from the transponder, and an RFID middleware with interfaces to other IT systems and databases. In contrast to other Auto-ID technologies, RFID allows contactless reading without direct visual contact.
Compared to barcode based systems, RFID technology has numerous advantages, e.g.
- Simultaneous identification of multiple transponders (multiple reading)
- Contactless data recognition in real time without visual contact
- Storage and modification of data
RFID is a technology of the future that has already found its way into trade and logistics. Extensive utilisation of RFID technology will depend especially on the development of transponder prices.
With the iRack™, Rittal brings RFID technology, in combination with modern logistics management, to the rack level. This solution makes it possible, for the first time, to automatically detect hardware components within the rack and to continuously monitor installation tasks, thus responding to the increasing need for intelligent inventory management concepts within the context of continuously growing IT infrastructures.
